Penang Hokkien Mee is the signature dish of Penang, it is a must to try if you are there. In the old days, the soup is made from boiling pork ribs and prawns. Traditionally, cubes of fried pork fat were added to the soup. A regular bowl of Hokkien mee consists of rice noodles, egg noodles and bean sprouts, garnish with small prawns, kangkong, deep fried shallots, half an egg and slices of pork. Some even add braised pig skin or pork ribs to it.
And also serve with chilli sambal.
Since my visit to Penang was a quite short trip, I decided to try out the Hokkien Mee at the junction of New Lane and Jalan Macalister coffee shop, which was quite near to the hotel I was staying at that time. The stall is run by a lady who works 12 to 14 hours a day just selling Hokkien Mee and Lor Mee. Actually I was quite happy with the bowl of noodle, not the best but it is still very goooood! I would have regretted leaving Penang without eating the signature Hokkien Hae Mee.
